The Moscow Symphony Orchestra was established in 1989 to allow the excellent musicians graduating each year from top Russian conservatories to remain in the country, thus preserving the country's great musical tradition. In addition to those recent graduates, the MSO also comprises experienced musicians from Russia’s top orchestras, as well as prizewinners of Russian and international competitions.

The MSO has been a regular feature of Moscow’s musical life since the early 1990s, performing in two of the city’s leading halls, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and Tchaikovsky Hall. Antonio de Almeida became the MSO's Music Director and Chief Conductor in 1993,but his leadership was cut short by his sudden death in 1997.

Since then, the orchestra has performed under the batons of such prominent Russian and foreign conductors as Arnold Katz, Gennadi Provatorov, Vladimir Ziva, Alexander Anissimov, Igor Golovchin, Dmitry Yablonsky, and Alexei Kornienko. Outstanding artists such as Yuri Bashmet, Victor Tretiakov, Vadim Repin, Vladimir Viardo, Valery Afanasiev, Boris Berezovsky, Svetlana Navasardyan, Alexander Rudin, and Oxana Yablonsky have appeared as soloists with the orchestra.

In addition to its extensive performing schedule, the MSO also records frequently. During the past three years the MSO has recorded 16 Symphonies (five CDs) by Malipiero; contemporary music of Guatemala (2 CDs); the complete symphonies of the French composer Charles Tournemire (3 CDs); an anthology of Flemish music (5 CDs); compositions for orchestra by French composers Auric, Tansman, and Sauguet, and Russian music by Scriabin, Glazunov, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and Tcherepnin. Most of these recordings are being released on the Marco Polo label.


In 1991 the orchestra made its first tour – to Finland – and others soon followed: Great Britain and Spain (1992); Hong Kong (1994); France (1995);Japan and Korea (1995); Austria (1996); Korea, France, Germany, and Austria (1997); and Japan, Austria, Germany, and the USA (1998).
